Carbon Removal

Permanently removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere

“By producing biochar we are mitigating climate change, decarbonising the local rice industry, and improving local livelihoods, all at once.”

Reducing greenhouse gases is critical to the future of human life on earth. We must remove atmospheric carbon dioxide permanently. Alcom does this through biochar carbon removal, a technology that leverages our expertise in converting waste biomass into sustainable, valuable products.

NuevaChar & ElectroChar

Our facilities in the Philippines convert husks and straw from the rice industry into carbon-removing biochar through the process of pyrolysis. The plants are models of end-to-end integration in CDR: from customising the pyrolysis technology that they use to overseeing the generation of high-quality carbon removal credits.

“We have a built a model for upcycling biomass waste to products that help both the climate and communities — and it can be deployed anywhere in the world.”

Alcom THL

Based in India, the Alcom-THL joint venture converts an invasive tree species into biochar and bio-oil. Like NuevaChar in the Philippines, the project is fully integrated from the sourcing of local feedstocks to on-site pyrolysis to scientific verification of the carbon removed.

Super-circular operations

Super-circular projects benefitting people and planet

NuevaChar operationalises the principles of the circular economy. It sources its biomass from local rice farmers, pyrolyses rice waste into carbon-removing biochar, and turns the biochar into a bio-fertiliser that helps rice crops grow in the next harvest. This is a super-circular system with maximum impact, benefitting people and planet in an endless loop.

community impact

Carbon removal that improves rice farmers’ livelihoods

Our biochar-based biofertilisers save farmers — and the government — money. They are less expensive than imported chemical fertilisers, less damaging to the environment, and can be even more effective: farms in the Philippines have seen over 20% improvement in rice yields* after applying it. The biofertiliser translates to extra income and improved livelihoods — just one example of how Alcom projects benefits the communities where we operate.

*Results from controlled testing in 2024 showed up to 27% increases in rice yields across 250 hectares of farmland in the Philippines.
