Green technology solutions matched to local conditions

Green technology solutions

From rice to maize to trees, many types of waste biomass can be converted for carbon removal, clean fuels, and clean energy. Many communities around the world will benefit by putting this waste to work for the energy transition. Alcom’s technology expertise helps make this a reality. Matching net zero technologies with local stocks of biomass, it helps companies and communities find value in organic matter that would otherwise be wasted.

Case Study

Case Study: Combined Heat and Power pyrolysis technology

The Alcom-THL joint venture is pioneering the use of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) technology to produce biochar and bio-oil in India and the Philippines.

The process is super-circular: it upcycles waste biomass to create carbon-removing biochar while co-generating its own power through syngas, a byproduct. The process matches the needs of local communities, industries, and utilities.

How it works
How it works

1. Rice husks or other waste biomass is pyrolysed in a reactor

How it works

2. The pyrolysis process creates biochar, which captures carbon in a stable state

How it works

3. Gases created during pyrolysis are used to help create bio-oil, which can then be blended into low-carbon fuels

How it works

4. Syngas is filtered, then recycled back into the pyrolysis reactor to renewably power more carbon removal

How it works

5. Excess renewable power is diverted to local industry or to electricity grid

Who it Benefits
Who it Benefits

1. Rural communities near Alcom plants experience less carbon pollution because power supplies are renewable.

WHO IT BENEFITS

2. Co-generated power relieves strain on overloaded rural electricity grids and helps avoid brownouts and blackouts in local areas

WHO IT BENEFITS

3. Surplus renewable power is fed back into the grid, making it cleaner.

How it works

4. Farmers find new revenue opportunities by selling waste biomass as a feedstock for carbon removal and renewable energy
